BOARDS AND COMMITTEES

 

Board of Ministry — The Board of Ministry consists of two teams and two committees, each responsible for the spiritual welfare of the congregation.  Each one works closely with the Senior Minister and Moderator. The following Committees and Teams report to the Board of Ministry: Called to Care Team, Diaconate (Deacons) Committee, Music Committee, and Welcome and Hospitality Team.

 

Board of Outreach — The Board of Outreach consists of five committees and is responsible for the social welfare and outreach of the congregation. This Board also works closely with the Senior Minister and Moderator.  The following Committees report to the Board of Outreach: Edwin J. Dietz Scholarship, Entertainment, Interfaith Council, Mary Petro Ministry and Fund (In conjunction with the Community Fund of Tampa Bay), and Missions.

 

Board of Trustees — The Board of Trustees consists of nine members and is responsible for the business affairs and the administration of all financial matters of the congregation. The Trustees prepare the annual budget, provide oversight of property management, supervise the Facilities Manager, administer all bequests and memorial gifts, and are responsible for the financial stewardship of the church.  The following committees report to the Board of Trustees: Budget, Facilities, Finance, Marketing and Publicity, and Personnel.

 

Budget Committee — The Budget Committee reports to the Board of Trustees.  The Budget Committee is responsible for creating the church’s annual budget. 

 

By-Laws Committee — The By-Laws Committee consists of four members of the congregation plus the Moderator.  The By-Laws Committee is responsible for the annual review and revision of the By-Laws of the church.  Any Board, Committee, or member of the congregation may submit possible changes.

 

Called to Care Team — The Called to Care Committee reports to the Board of Ministry. The Called to Care Team consists of church members who feel called to assist in the Pastoral Care ministries of the congregation under the direction of a Coordinator.  Pastoral Care duties include:  visiting the homebound, those in assisted living, those in nursing homes and hospitals, and those who are under Hospice care.

 

Church Council — The Church Council represents the congregation and is the administrative body of the church.   Boards and Committees are accountable to the Church Council between annual meetings. The Church Council consists of the Moderator, Vice Moderator, Treasurer, Clerk, Historian, one representative of the various Boards, two members-at-large, and the pastoral staff who serve as non-voting members.

 

Community Church College — The Community Church College provides continuing adult education programs to serve the broader community.  The Community Church College Board of Directors consists of nine members, six of whom shall be elected by the congregation and three non-church members elected by the Board of Directors of the College, after approval by the Church Council.

 

Diaconate (Deacons) — The Diaconate Committee reports to the Board of Ministry. The Diaconate Committee consists of two teams of up to eight members, including and a captain for each.  The Chairperson shall not serve as a team captain. The purpose of the Diaconate is to support the Senior Minister in the fulfillment of her/his responsibilities.  Duties of the Diaconate include:  ushering, preparing Holy Communion, assisting with memorial services, and maintaining the Book of Remembrance, which records memorial gifts.

 

Edwin J. Dietz Scholarship Committee — The Scholarship Committee reports to the Board of Outreach and oversees the distribution of the Edwin J. Dietz Scholarship Fund providing scholarships to local high school students.  The Moderator appoints Committee members from the membership when vacancies occur. 

 

Entertainment Committee (Fun Brigade) — The Entertainment Committee reports to the Board of Outreach. The purpose is to provide entertainment and social activities to enhance and enrich the lives the SouthShore United Church of Christ and the larger community. 

 

Finance Committee — The Finance Committee reports to the Board of Trustees.  The Finance Committee is responsible for keeping track of the church’s finances and overseeing its investment funds.

 

In-House Audit Committee — The In-House Audit Committee consists of no less than two members-at-large from the congregation, each appointed by the Moderator and approved by the Church Council. The In-House Audit Committee provides annual audits and/or financial reviews and submits a written report to the Moderator and the Board of Trustees.

 

Interfaith Council — The Interfaith Council reports to the Board of Outreach and is responsible for connecting the congregation with the broader interfaith community, with specific attention to the operation of the Nearly New Shop.  The Interfaith Council works closely with the ministers of area churches, encouraging participation by the entire community.

 

Maintenance Volunteers — Maintenance volunteers report to the Facilities Director and assist with cleaning, room set-up, and other maintenance needs that arise. 

 

Marketing and Publicity Committee — The Marketing and Publicity Committee reports to the Board of Trustees.  The Marketing and Publicity Committee works with the ministerial staff to create a strategic marketing plan in promoting the church, making recommendations about the ways the church’s advertising budget will be allocated.

 

Mary Petro Ministry and Fund — The Mary Petro Ministry reports to the Board of Outreach. The Mary Petro Ministry serves in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, distributing its discretionary funds.  The Mary Petro Ministry provides food and prescription assistance to needy residents of Sun City Center and Kings Point. Volunteers assist the Coordinator on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

 

Missions Committee — The Missions Committee reports to the Board of Outreach. The Missions Committee consists of four members charged with the purpose of responding to local benevolent requests and causes advocated by the Florida Conference, United Church of Christ. 

 

Music Committee — The Music Committee reports to the Board of Ministry.  The Music Committee consists of four members assisting in the selection, assignment, and supervision of all music personnel. Along with the Director of Music, the Music Committee prepares and gives oversight of the music budget.  The Music Committee works closely with the Senior Minister, the Director of Music, and the Organist in planning and implementing the music ministries of the congregation.  

 

Nominating Committee — The Nominating Committee consists of the Vice-Moderator and one representative from the Boards of the congregation, including the Women’s Fellowship, and one member-at-large. The duties of the Nominating Committee are to select nominees from the membership to fill Officer, Board, and Committee vacancies.  The Nominating Committee presents its recommended slate of candidates at the Annual meeting.

 

Office Volunteers — Office volunteers serve in the church office, assisting the Ministers and the support staff of the church.  Office duties include:  answering the telephone, filing, typing, preparing mail, and other tasks that arise. 

 

Pastoral Relations Board — The Pastoral Relations Board consists of three members who serve as an advisory group to the Senior Minister.

 

Personnel Committee — The Personnel Committee reports to the Board of Trustees.  The Personnel Committee provides evaluations for all contract and support staff.  In consultation with the Senior Minister, the Personnel Committee makes recommendations regarding the hiring or dismissal of employees.

 

Stewardship Board — The Stewardship Board consists of its Chairperson, the Moderator, the Treasurer, the Pastoral Relations Chairperson, and two members-at-large.  The Stewardship Board is responsible for educating and informing the congregation about the stewardship and financial needs of the church. This Stewardship Board works closely with the Senior Minister, Board of Trustees, and the Church Council to develop and implement annual giving, planned-giving, and stewardship programs.

 

Welcome and Hospitality Team — The Welcome and Hospitality Team reports to the Board of Ministry.  The Welcome and Hospitality Team is made up of volunteers, one of whom is designated as the Coordinator. The purpose of the Welcome and Hospitality Team is to ensure that all guests are given a good SouthShore United Church of Christ welcome.  The Welcome and Hospitality Team works closely with the Senior Minister to assimilate persons into the congregational life of the church. 

 

Women’s Fellowship — A women’s social group.  All women of the congregation are automatically considered members of the Women’s Fellowship.  The Women’s Fellowship meets monthly October, November, February, March, and May.
